Coming Up With Unique Birthday Cake Ideas

Want to to create a unique birthday cake but not sure where to start? Here's a plan to get you moving. It will require some brainstorming which of course means that you shouldn't edit yourself in the beginning. There will be time for that later.

1. Make a long list about your guest of honor. Don't be afraid to include anything and everything. For example, under likes and dislikes include specific food items and phobias. Remember, this is the brainstorming stage. Items you might want to include:
   • unique qualities
   • interests
   • hobbies
   • age
   • items associated with the era of their birth

   • dislikes
   • profession
2. Start going through the list and thinking about how each item could translate into a cake.
3. Cross off any items that would be too time consuming, costly, or require a greater cake decorating ability than you currently have.
4. Once you decide on a couple of topics, go shopping or do a web search to come up with a greater number of ideas on how to put you cake together. Don't forget that you can include light objects on the cake. You can also go to a specialty chocolate shop and get them to create unique items to put on your cake.
5. Practice individual decorating parts if necessary on cardboard.
6. If you are making your cake for a special party, you might want to go ahead and try it out first just to see how it turns out.
